Ask and check / guidebook

What can I ask in plain words?

Choose the questions that matter to you. Keep room for the answers.

Begin with the purpose

What concern are we working on? What would make this option a fit for me? What else could we consider?

Ask about the medicine and the evidence

What is its exact name? What kind of medicine is it? What research supports it for the problem we are discussing? What did that research actually measure?

If the answer uses a word you do not know, ask for the meaning before moving on. If a study is mentioned, ask for its name so you can return to it.

Ask what happens after the visit

Who explains the results? Who replies if I have a medicine question? What would lead us to review the plan? What happens if I want to stop paying for the service?

FSMB guidance calls for patients to be able to ask their clinician questions afterward.

FSMB is the Federation of State Medical Boards. It advises state offices that license doctors; every state decides which rules it has authority to enforce.

Bring the bill into the conversation

What is the full cost? What is included in the care fee? Are tests and medicine separate? Which fees recur? Can I have those terms in writing?

You do not have to use every question. A short note that leaves space for the answer is enough to begin.
