What can I ask before an in-person visit?

Make the purpose of the visit clear before you arrive.

Name the question you want time for

When you arrange a visit, say what you want to discuss. Ask who will see you and whether you can bring past records. Write down what you most want explained.

An empty reading desk and chair sit beside a window overlooking trees.

Ask what is included in the assessment

Will the visit be a discussion, an examination, a review of test results, or a mix? If tests are offered, ask what each would answer and how the results would change the plan.

Ask which fees come with the visit and which are separate. Ask for a written quote if several services are put together.

Check the name before the visit

The state office that licenses doctors can show whether a doctor has a licence and any public record of penalties.

A record showing no penalties leaves the quality of the doctor’s care unanswered.

After checking the record, return to the questions you want answered face to face.

Leave with the next step in words

Ask who will explain any results and who will hear later questions. If a medicine is discussed, ask for its exact name, the reason for it, and the plan for follow-up.

You can have an unfamiliar term explained a second time. Your notes can be short enough to use.
