# Where can the search begin?

Start with a concern, then choose how to look for a name.

## Say what you want help with

Try a sentence in your own words: I want help with my weight. I want to discuss a medicine someone suggested. I want someone to explain a treatment I have seen online.

A broad word like longevity can be the start of your search. It does not have to be the whole question.

## Ask for a referral with a reason

If you already see a clinician, ask whom they would suggest for your concern, and why. Ask what the next person would add to the care you already have.

If you are starting without a referral, make a short list from your own search. Then ask each service who would assess you and request that person’s full name.

## Use a board record to check the name

For links to the state offices holding doctors’ licence records, use the Federation of State Medical Boards.

Those offices publish licence records and records of penalties; the details vary by state.

A doctor’s name may end in MD or DO; some states hold records for these doctors at different offices.

Check the letters after the doctor’s name so you search the right office.

## Keep the routes connected

A referral gives you a name to explore. A board record gives you details to check. Direct questions help you understand how care would work. Use the routes together, at your own pace.
